Hate him or not, Marilyn Manson (along with former bassist / song writer Twiggy Ramirez) is back in 2009 with a new album The High End of Low. The days of “Shock Rock” and teen anthems are over and Manson is showing that he too can evolve. Track 10 on the album, Wight Spider, is definitely worthy of a Deep Cut.

The slow paced, minimal rock verse features a simple fuzzy bass progression and a hollow guitar pluck. Manson shows off his gritty shrill by screaming “And I won’t make you kneel for anyone but me…” This is the kind of song that Marilyn Manson’s voice was made for… slow… dark… and bitterly enraged.

The Verve – Appalachian Springs

This epic chillout track is the final track on The Verve’s reunion album Forth, and there was no better way for this album to come to a close. It opens with a soothing bassline and complimentary drum track that sets the tone for the rest of the song. Richard Ashcroft’s ghostly voice enters in that signature calming Verve fashion and soars through the chorus.

Forth may not have been as big of a success as The Verve’s Urban Hymns album, but this song deserves some recognition and a second listen.

A sludgy, industrial tinged rocker with a perfect pop structure, Afraid was the first (and last) single from Mötley’s Generation Swine. Featuring an instantly recognizable bassline in the verses from Nikki Sixx, a solid backbeat is provided from Tommy Lee’s electronically treated drum kit while Mick Mars’ guitars are heavily processed into sound effects with melodic texture. Vince’s voice blends perfectly into the mix with sleazy pop grandeur, sounding possessed in the breakdown section as Nikki harmonizes “There is no cure” to an intense final chorus. Afraid stands separate in the Crüe’s catalogue as one of their most original songs, discarding all clichéd elements of rock and metal previously associated with the group.

This song deserves a second spin for its adventurous production and performance. This is the sound of a band having fun with music, reinventing itself and not caring what anyone else has to say about it.

Afraid is originally found on Generation Swine but can also be heard on Mötley Crüe’s Greatest Hits as well as Red, White & Crue.
